Mine Risk Education is essential for people living, working, and travelling in areas contaminated with landmines.  

This year, MAG America is running a campaign to raise $100,000 to support MAG’s work in Angola.

MAG has been working in Angola since 1994, deploying Mine Action Teams to address the incredible need for clearance.  At the end of 2011, the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor reported that 142,000,000 m² of land needed to be cleared in Moxico Province, the most heavily mined province in Angola, and where MAG works. Even though the need is overwhelming, support for this country has fallen short since the civil war ended, as new priorities for donors become more critical across sub-Saharan Africa.  

What will the lack of support mean for MAG's program in Angola?  

MAG, this means that as we struggle to maintain our clearance capacity with government donations, we must cut our critical Community Liaison Teams.  In all countries where we work they provide vital support including:

• Conducting Mine Risk Education (MRE) to teach people how to avoid landmines and remain safe.
• Educating  returning refugees about the dangers awaiting them as they return to their country.
• Recording information about Suspected Hazardous Areas (SHAs) for future clearance.
• Communicating with local communities during clearance activities to ensure they evacuate work areas and remain safe.

What would your donation to Angola do?

By raising $100,000 from American corporations, foundations, and individual donors, we can keep our Community Liaison Teams (CLTs) employed and supporting their community.  During those five months the team can:

• Conduct 60 Mine Risk Education (MRE) sessions in Angola.  Each session reaches 720 people (indirectly and directly) and CLTs are able to do 12 sessions per month, helping over 43,000 people;
• Assist MAG Mine Action Teams in  their clearance and release of 244,602 m² of land in Suspected Hazardous Areas that are settled by families or in busy markets by encouraging families to evacuate their homes during clearance;
• Keep local staff employed in meaningful jobs that support their families and reshape their country.
